Tomas si peragu? (Doubting Thomas?)

Maka kata murid-murid yang lain itu kepadanya: “ Kami telah melihat Tuhan!” Tetapi Tomas berkata kepada mereka: “Sebelum aku melihat bekas paku pada tangan-Nya dan sebelum aku mencucukkan tanganku ke dalam lambung-Nya, sekali-kali aku tidak akan percaya.”

(Yohanes 20:25)

Saudara yang dikasihi Tuhan, mungkin inilah kalimat yang paling terkenal dari seorang rasul Yesus Kristus bernama Tomas. Dan mungkin inilah yang menyebabkan julukan Tomas kita sandangkan kepada orang yang ragu-ragu atau meragukan sesuatu. Penulis ingat ketika kecil saat tidak yakin terhadap sesuatu, anak-anak lain akan menyoraki penulis dengan sebutan Tomas.

Tomas, menjadi trade mark untuk mereka yang ragu-ragu. Benarkah demikian?

Sebenarnya dalam keseluruhan Injil, dicatat ada 4 kali percakapan yang melibatkan Tomas berbicara atau mengemukakan pendapatnya. Sesungguhnya tidak semuanya menunjukkan keraguannya. Bahkan tampaknya Tomas adalah salah satu murid yang paling pemberani dengan realistis. Artinya, keberaniaannya bukan emosional seperti Petrus yang berkata dengan percaya diri tidak akan menyangkal Yesus namun malam harinya tiga kali menyangkal Yesus, lalu pergi menangis tersedu-sedu. Tidak dengan Tomas.

Pada pembacaan lain dikisahkan saat Yesus menghadiri pentahbisan Bait Allah di Yerusalem dan Yesus berjalan-jalan di Serambi Salomo pada Bait Allah itu. Yohanes 10 mencatat bahwa saat itu Yesus dipertanyakan identitas-Nya apakah Mesias atau bukan oleh para orang Yahudi saat itu. Dan saat Yesus bahkan menyatakan dengan jelas identitas-Nya melalui bukti-bukti pekerjaan ajaib yang dilakukan-Nya, malah orang-orang Yahudi mengatakan Yesus menghujat Allah dan hendak melempari Dia dengan batu.

Pada pasal berikutnya, Yohanes 11 mencatat bahwa setelah sekian waktu lamanya Yesus pergi menjauhi Yerusalem dan Yudea, kedengaranlah berita bahwa Lazarus sedang sakit. Lazarus ini adalah saudara Marta dan Maria, kedua orang wanita yang melayani Yesus dan rombongan-Nya, ketiga kakak beradik ini bagaikan saudara bagi Yesus dan murid-murid. Dan Lazaruspun meninggal karena sakit. Kemudian Yesus memutuskan untuk kembali ke Yudea menemui keluarga duka ini. Saat itulah para murid berkomentar: “Rabi, baru-baru ini orang-orang Yahudi mencoba melempari Engkau, masih maukah Engkau kembali ke sana?” Yesus tetap bersikeras ke sana.

Dan kemudian inilah perkataan heroik Tomas saat itu: “Marilah kita pergi juga untuk mati bersama-sama dengan Dia.”

Wow, ini sebuah pilihan kata yang penuh keberanian atau kenekatan? Menurut saya ini keberanian sejati. Dia bisa memilih untuk tidak pergi, memilih melihat dari jauh, namun Tomas bahkan mengajak dan menyemangati murid-murid lain untuk pergi bahkan jika perlu, mati bersama-sama Yesus. Namun adakah orang mengingat ini? Selain Tomas si peragu, apakah ada yang mengingat Tomas si pemberani?

Kemudian catatan selanjutnya adalah menunjukkan ketelitian Tomas dalam setiap pengajaran Yesus. Malam itu setelah perjamuan kudus, yaitu setelah Yesus membasuh kaki murid-murid untuk mengajarkan para murid menjadi lebih rendah hati lagi dibanding siapapun juga, karena sebagai guru dan Tuhan, Yesus telah membasuh kaki murid-muridnya bagai seorang hamba (pembantu rumah tangga), maka tentu para murid harus lebih rendah lagi daripada gurunya. Kemudian setelah perjamuan dimana Yesus mengisyaratkan penghianatan yang akan dialami-Nya dan kegagalan Petrus yang akan menyangkal diri-Nya, kemudian Yesus menjelaskan tentang Sorga sebagai Rumah Bapa. Yesus berkata “Dan kemana Aku pergi (yaitu Rumah Bapa), kamu tahu jalan ke situ.”.

Yohanes pasal 14:5 Kata Tomas kepada-Nya: “Tuhan, kami tidak tahu kemana Engkau pergi; jadi bagaimana kami tahu jalan ke situ?”

Ini pertanyaan paling tepat dan paling kritis dari seorang murid Yesus, dan ini keluar dari mulut Tomas. Dia benar, memang Yesus memberitahukan bahwa Dia akan pergi ke Rumah Bapa menyediakan tempat bagi mereka, namun tidak menunjukkan arah atau jalan ke Rumah itu, selayaknya seorang menunjukkan tempat, namun Yesus berkata para murid tahu jalan ke situ. Tentu ini membingungkan, namun Tomas lah yang bertanya. Sehingga Yesus menyatakan jalan ke Rumah Bapa dengan jelas, bahkan menjadi ayat hafalan dan ayat kepastian keselamatan dalam iman kepada Yesus Kristus, ayat selanjutnya, Kata Yesus kepadanya: “Akulah Jalan dan kebenaran dan hidup. Tidak seorangpun yang datang kepada Bapa (Sorga), kalau tidak melalui Aku.”

Memperhatikan ini, apakah orang mengingat Tomas sebagai seorang yang kritis dan penuh perhatian terhadap perkataan Yesus? Atau sekedar Tomas yang meragukan Yesus?

Selanjutnya setelah Yesus disalibkan, pada hari ketiga Dia bangkit dari antara orang mati. Dan ini menjadi berita panas saat itu. Informasi simpang siur. Faktanya batu penutup gua kuburan Yesus telah terguling dan kubur mengaga. Tak ada mayat Yesus di sana selain kain kapan yang tergulung rapih. Para tentara yang manjaga kubur menyaksikan kegentaran mengerikan saat gempa mengguncang dan menggeser batu penutup itu, mereka lari ketakutan saat Yesus bangkit.

Pagi-pagi benar para wanita melaporkan kubur Yesus telah kosong, para murid-murid berlarian membuktikan hal itu. Maria bahkan tertinggal di taman dekat kubur itu dan bertemu dengan Yesus yang sudah bangkit. Lalu kedua murid lain yang hendak ke luar kota pun bertemu Yesus. Alkitab mencatat bahwa Yesus menampakkan diri berkali-kali diberbagai tempat.

Para ahli Taurat dan orang Farisi mengeluarkan fatwa bahwa mayat Yesus dicuri para murid-murid-Nya. Sehingga para murid menjadi takut dan mengunci diri dalam rumah-rumah persembunyian, sampai tiba-tiba Yesus datang di tengah-tengah mereka, bahkan makan bersama mereka membuktikan kebangkitan-Nya dari kematian. Namun saat itu Tomas tidak hadir.

Kemudian ketika bertemu Tomas pada kesempatan lain, para murid mengatakan bahwa mereka telah melihat Yesus yang sudah bangkit. Apa respon Tomas?

“Sebelum aku melihat bekas paku pada tangan-Nya dan sebelum aku mencucukkan tanganku ke dalam lambung-Nya, sekali-kali aku tidak akan percaya.”

Dan sejak itu julukan Tomas si peragu menjadi sindiran bagi mereka yang meragukan sesuatu apapun.

Kecenderungan manusia memang demikian, lebih mudah melihat kekurangan (atau dianggap kekurangan) pada diri orang lain. Kita mungkin pernah melihat seorang anak buta yang bermain piano begitu lincah bak maestro, namun saat kita belum mengenal dan hanya melihat dia duduk sebagai bocah buta, kita melihat dengan rendah dan kasihan atas kekurangan itu. Padahal, kita bahkan tidak tahu bagaimana memainkan kunci dasar piano.

Tomas meragukan Yesus? Tentu tidak. Dia tidak takut mati bersama Yesus. Dia tahu siapa Yesus sebagai jalan dan kebenaran dan hidup. Dia juga mendengar perkataan Yesus tentang Mesias yang harus mati lalu bangkit pada hari ketiga. Tetapi juga berita simpang siur berputar-putar saat itu. Gosip menjadi realita yang sangat berbahaya pada masa itu. Murid-murid mengaku melihat Yesus, namun berita lain dari para prajurit yang menjaga kubur adalah mayat Yesus dicuri orang. Seorang mati lalu bangkit? Ini pernah terjadi pada Lazarus. Jadi respon Tomas adalah sangat kritis, jika belum mencucukkan jari pada lubang paku dan lambung Yesus, dia tidak percaya.

Saya sangat bersyukur dengan keteguhan dan kritisnya iman Tomas. Saat ini banyak injil palsu yang beredar. Awalnya hanya mayat Yesus yang dicuri. Kemudian ada injil yang menyatakan bahwa yang dihukum dan yang bangkit merupakan orang yang berbeda. Atau ada seorang yang dirupakan seperti Yesus dan bangkit. Tanpa pengalaman Tomas mencucukkan jari pada lubang paku di tangan dan kaki Yesus, serta lambung-Nya, maka saya kesulitan membuktikan bahwa benar Yesus itulah yang mati dan yang bangkit. Tak ada seorang manusia yang di “rupa” kan Yesus sebagai kebangkitan dan masih hidup dalam kondisi tangan dan kaki berlubang dan lambung berlubang bukan? Kecuali benar-benar tubuh ilahi itulah yang sudah bangkit yaitu tubuh Yesus sendiri sebagai Tuhan sejati.

Jika memang “permintaan” bukti dari Tomas ini tidak penting bagi Tuhan Yesus, tentu tidak dicatat dalam Alkitab. Terlebih lagi, buat apa Tuhan Yesus meladeni dengan datang pada Tomas meminta dia mencucukkan jarinya pada lubang paku dan lambung-Nya?

Di waktu kemudian, saat seperti yang sama, Yohanes 20 mencatat, para murid sedang bersembunyi pada rumah terkunci, saat Tomas ada, Yesus kembali hadir secara ajaib saat itu. Kemudian Ia berkata kepada Tomas: “Taruhlah jarimu di sini dan lihatlah tangan-Ku, ulurkanlah tanganmu dan cucukkan ke dalam lambung-Ku dan jangan engkau tidak percaya lagi, melainkan percayalah.”

Tomas menjawab Dia: “Ya Tuhanku dan Allahku!”

Sebuah seruan dan pengakuan iman yang otentik, pasti dan berdasar bukti yang akurat. Tomas menjadi satu-satunya saksi yang kritis. Dengan iman Tomas, maka setiap orang bisa yakin dan percaya, bahwa hanya satu injil yang benar dan itu adalah apa yang disaksikan Tomas sendiri, yaitu Yesus Kristus benar-benar Tuhan dan Allah yang menjadi manusia, yang mati dan bangkit, benar-benar hidup, Tomas meraba dan mengetahui dengan pasti.

Tuhan sama sekali tidak menyalahkan Tomas, tapi Tuhan Yesus tahu bahwa akan banyak orang yang mencari bukti seperti Tomas. Setelah angkatan itu tiada, yaitu para Rasul, maka akan sangat sulit bagi orang untuk membuktikan kebenaran Injil tentang keselamatan Yesus Kristus. Akan banyak injil-injil palsu dan berita simpang siur. Tapi dengan adanya Tomas, ini akan memastikan semua orang yang tidak melihat dan percaya untuk berbahagia.

Kata Yesus kepadanya: “Karena engkau telah melihat Aku, maka engkau percaya. Berbahagialah mereka yang tidak melihat, namun percaya.”

Kisah Tomas dalam Alkitab mungkin habis di sini, dia tidak menulis surat maupun injil seperti Matius, Markus, Lukas dan Yohanes. Tidak juga seperti Yudas (bukan Iskariot) maupun Yakobus, atau seperti Paulus yang terkenal itu. Sejarah gereja mencatat, Tomas pergi ke daerah India memberitakan injil Yesus Kristus di sana.

Dimana tempat yang sangat mengutamakan bukti untuk percaya. Dimana orang-orang yang mempercayai apa saja yang kelihatan memberikan bukti (contoh percaya ular yang bisa mematikan, pohon yang memberi perlindungan, matahari dan sebagainya). Tomas hadir di sana sebagai satu-satunya manusia yang memberikan bukti, aku sudah melihat kebenaran dan aku percaya dengan kebenaran itu sepenuh akal dan hatiku.

Kita tidak melihat Yesus dan mencucukkan tangan kita pada lubang paku dan lambung-Nya. Tapi Tomas sudah. Kita punya bukti yang terlengkap, kita memiliki Alkitab. Tidak melihat namun percaya bukan berarti tidak mengenal dan percaya bodoh. Tetapi percaya dengan sepenuh hati dan pengertian. Alkitab tersedia untuk itu, jika kita membaca dan mempelajarinya sepenuh hati. Suatu saat kita juga akan melihat Dia, bukan saja berbahagia, tetapi lebih daripada berbahagia.

Iman Tomas, seorang yang percaya bukan saja lewat perasaannya, tetapi dengan melihat, menyentuh dan dengan akal budinya sesadar-sadarnya. Adakah anda percaya sepenuhnya bahwa Yesus telah bangkit sebagaimana iman Tomas?

Beloved, this may be the most famous phrase of an apostle of Jesus Christ named Thomas. And maybe this is what causes Thomas's nickname we are flocking to a person who doubts or doubts something. The author remembers as a child when not sure about something, other kids would cheer authors as Thomas.

Thomas, becomes a trade mark for those who are hesitant. Is that right?

Actually in the entire Gospel, there are four conversations that involve Thomas speaking or expressing his opinion. In fact, not all of them show any doubt. In fact, it seems that Thomas is one of the most courageous and realistic disciples. That is, his loyalty is not as emotional as Peter who said with confidence will not deny Jesus but at night denied Jesus three times, then went sobbing. Not with Thomas.

On the other reading is told when Jesus attended the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking in Solomon's Porch in the temple. John 10 records that at that time Jesus was questioned of his identity whether the Messiah or not by the Jews at the time. And when Jesus even made a clear statement of His identity through the miraculous proofs of His work, even the Jews say Jesus blasphemed God and was about to stone Him.

In the next chapter, John 11 records that after the time Jesus went away from Jerusalem and Judea, it was heard that Lazarus was ill. This Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Mary, the two women who served Jesus and his entourage, these three brothers were like brothers to Jesus and the disciples. And Lazarus died of illness. Then Jesus decided to return to Judea to meet this grieving family. It was then that the disciples commented: "Rabbi, recently the Jews are trying to stone you, will you still go back there?" Jesus insisted there.

And then this is Thomas's heroic words then: "Let us go also to die with him."

Wow, is this a choice of words full of courage or recklessness? I think this is true courage. He could choose not to go, choose a look from a distance, but Thomas even invite and encourage other students to go even if necessary, to die with Jesus. But do anyone remember this? Besides Thomas the doubter, does anyone remember the brave Thomas?

Then the next record is to show the accuracy Tomas in every teaching of Jesus. That night after communion, that is, after Jesus washed the disciples' feet to teach students to become more humble longer than anyone else, because as a teacher and Lord, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples like a servant (housekeeper), then of course the students should be lower than the teacher. Then after supper where Jesus hinted betrayal that will be experienced Him and failures Peter would deny Him, then Jesus describes heaven as the Father's House. Jesus said, "And where I go (ie Father's House), ye know the way.".

John, chapter 14: 5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way? "

Of course this is confusing, but Thomas was the one who asked. Noting this, if people remember Thomas as a critical and attentive to the words of Jesus? Or just Thomas who doubted Jesus?

Early in the morning the women reported Jesus' tomb empty, the disciples running around proving it. Mary even left in the garden near the tomb and met the risen Jesus. Then the other two students who went out of town met Jesus. The Bible records that Jesus appeared many times in various places.

The scribes and Pharisees issued an announcement that the body of Jesus stolen by His disciples. So that the disciples became afraid and lock themselves in houses hiding, until suddenly Jesus comes in the midst of them, even eating with them to prove the resurrection from the dead. But then Thomas was not present.

Then when meeting Thomas on another occasion, the disciples said they had seen the risen Jesus. What is Tomas's response?

"Before I see the nail marks in his hand and before I put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."

And since then Tomas the doubter nickname has become a hint for those who doubt anything.

The human tendency is so, more easily see the flaws (or perceived lack of) in others. We may never see a blind child playing the piano so mercurial maestro tub, but when we do not know and just seeing him sitting as a blind boy, we look with pity upon low and the lack of it. Thomas doubted Jesus? Certainly not. He is not afraid to die with Jesus. He knows who Jesus is as a way and truth and life. He also heard the words of Jesus about the Messiah who must die and rise on the third day. But the news also circled around in that moment. Gossip became a very dangerous reality in those days. The disciples claimed to see Jesus, but other news from the soldiers guarding the grave was the body of Jesus stolen. A dead man gets up? This has happened to Lazarus. So Thomas's response is very critical, if he has not put his finger on the hole and nail of Jesus, he does not believe it.

I am very grateful for the persistence and critical of faith of Thomas. Today many false gospels in circulation. Initially only the body of Jesus that was stolen. Then there is the gospel that states that were punished and the rise is a different person. Or a man who made look like Jesus and rises. Without the experience of Thomas put a finger in the nail holes in his hands and feet of Jesus, and his stomach, then I find it difficult to prove that true Jesus is dead and risen. There is no human being in the "likeness" of Jesus as the resurrection and still living in the condition of hollow arms and legs and hollow stomach is not it? Unless it is truly the divine body that has risen, the body of Jesus Himself as the true God.

If indeed "demand" proof of Thomas is not important to the Lord Jesus, certainly not recorded in the Bible. What's more, what did Jesus Jesus serve by coming to Thomas asking him to put his finger in the nail hole in his hand and in his side?

At a later time, as the same time, John 20 record, the disciples were hiding in the house locked, when Thomas was, Jesus miraculously comes back then. Then he said to Thomas: "Put your finger here and look at my hand, stretch out your hand and put it in My side and do not believe it, but trust me."

Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"

An authentic, definite and groundbreaking proof of faith and recognition. Thomas became the only critical witness. By the faith of Thomas, every one can be sure and believe that only one gospel is true and that is what Thomas himself witnessed, that Jesus Christ is truly God and the God who became man, who died and rose, is truly alive, Thomas felt and knew for sure.

God did not blame Thomas, but Jesus knew that many people will look for evidence like Tomas. After that generation died, namely the Apostles, it will be very difficult for people to prove the truth of the gospel of salvation of Jesus Christ. There will be many false gospels and confusing news. But with Thomas, this will ensure that all those who do not see and believe it to be happy.

Jesus said to him: "Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. "

Thomas story in the Bible may end here, he did not write the letter and the gospel such as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Not like Judas (not Iscariot) or James, or as Paul is famous for. Church history notes, Tomas went to the area of ​​India preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ there.

Where a place that strongly prioritizes the evidence to believe. Where people who believe in what seems to be providing evidence (eg believe a deadly snake, a tree that gives protection, sun and so on). Thomas was there as the only man who has given evidence, I've seen the truth and I believe the truth of the whole mind and heart.

We do not see Jesus and put our hands in his nails and holes. But Thomas has. We have the most complete evidence, we have the Bible. Not seeing but believing does not mean not knowing and believing fools. But believe with all my heart and understanding. The Bible is available for that, if we read and study it wholeheartedly. One day we will also see Him, not only happy, but more than happy.

Thomas' faith, one who believes not only through his feelings, but by seeing, touching and with his intellect and most conscious. Do you really believe that Jesus has risen as Thomas's faith?
